Our Visit to Mandarin Restaurant

245, 20th St W, Saskatoon

Cuisine: Chinese

Date: May 6, 2023

Spent: $25 per person (average)

This is probably one of the oldest restaurant we have been in Saskatoon. The building, furniture, environment, literally everything looks old.

Walking in to the restaurant is not quite pleasant as well. The greeting area is old and musky. It was our first time stepping in and we were not immediately greeted, leaving us "looking lost". Read: no one was at the reception and we were just observing how old the place looks.

Shortly after, a staff appeared (not the most friendly person we've met) and had us seated beside the window.

We were starving when we arrived and were lucky that the service was prompt even though the restaurant was about 30% full (mind you, they have a large floor space).

As we were looking to fill up with dim sum, we did not request for a menu, since they have the dim sum carts going around where we can just pick what we wanted directly from the cart.

What we ordered Round 1 dim sum They have a good variety of steamed and fried dim sum. Nothing fancy, just the typical dim sum that you would expect such as har gao (shrimp filled dim sum), siew mai (pork dim sum), popiah (spring rolls), etc.

Round 2 dim sum The chee cheong fun was basic at most. The skin was a bit thick and the sauce was plain.

Paos The paos up close.
👍🏼 Sold per piece, they don't force you to take a tray of three of a kind pao.
👎🏼 Hardly restaurant quality in terms of looks, filling, and texture.

Star dish dim sum This is the star of the day! To be honest, we had no idea what we were eating but they were crunchy and flavorful.

You will be given a card where they will note the dim sum you took. Bring the card to the reception when you are done for the bill.

Staffs were mostly teenagers and they work fairly quickly. They will come to remove any empty plate as soon as you removed the last piece of food. It was rather amusing to observe their swift service.

Price was pretty standard for dim sums but we can't find any reason to revisit. We much prefer Yip Hong Dim Sum, for the food quality and ambience.
